When my parents found out they were having a baby back in 1978, they decided that one of the keepsakes to pass down to me would be a bit of craftiness.

They made a stocking for me. When my borther and sister came along they did the same for them.
When I found out that my sister was expecting her first child, I knew that she would not be making any stockings. I went to Michael's and bought a Jumbo stocking kit to make for Kendall. I thought that this would be her only child and I wasn't planning on having any, so he needed the biggest and the best. It took me nearly a year and a half to finish it.
At the same time, I bought a kit for TP a stocking, so he could have one like everyone else. It languished in the closet for awhile, but I finally got it out and got to work on it.

This one got finished about the time my mother handed over the kit for my other nephew's stocking. Normally there are about 50 setps in the stocking process, this one had 150.

It was my best work yet. Then I found out I was pregnant, and the stocking tradition continues. Or it will once I get off my ass and get to work on it. I've got a bunch of work to do in the next two months if there are going to be toy cars, rattles, balls, and oranges in this stocking:

Wow. Those are gorgeous. And I love the idea of homemade stockings -- mine was made for me by my great grandmother, who died when I was just over a year old.

Those are beautiful! I am crafty with cakes and scrapbooks, but our family stocking tradition is buy a red and white stocking, write the name in glue and sprinkle with glitter. Not so crafty.
