Guess What? I Finally Gave Some Awards!

This month I decided to give ROFL awards to two people who made my day a little brighter. 
 
The first one goes to:

That chick over there at Jason. For the Love of God. for her post on dating, The guy With George Bush on his Wall.

This woman is hysterical.  Like have to look around and make sure no one is looking at you after you read an entry because you've been trying to squelch the giggle fit that is threatening to erupt, hysterical. 

The second award is a bit anti-climatic since some other people decided to outdo me and award this one a perfect post award. 

But this is her first ROFL award, so Ha!

Susan, always quick with a funny kid story, truly outdid herself this month.

Antlers

We're almost ready to come home guys (I'm sure I was ready after Tuesday, but now I'm really ready).  And it's the official start of the Christmas season! 

If you're out shopping, you are insane.

My furry babies have been picked as the dogs of the week over at Mrs. Chicky's Dog Gone Blog!  I took the pictures one day when I was getting ready to go back to work after lunch.  All the dogs stay inside during the day and TP or I come home at lunch to let them out to have some running around time.  When it's time to go back to work, you have to say "Alright, guys!  Let's go inside!" and they come running.  "Alright" in our house is synonymous with "treat," and that's about as much training as they remember from the months of doggie day care and training sessions.  Without fail, Jax comes in and stretches up the dishwasher, Eleanor is right beside him, and Pete stands by the kitchen door, waiting on a treat.  You have to stand in between Pete and any other dog consuming food, or he will attack, since he's in charge of this house.  And all the ear cleaning.  Eleanor and Jax have the cleanest ears of any dogs on the planet, due to Pete's superior tongue. 

Pete is trying to figure out a way to add Mr. Cheeks to his pack, and we are having to tell him no, to keep his tongue out of Mr. Cheeks' ears.   Mr. Cheeks has figured out how to move around on his stomach and to his delight, Jax does not like having his legs grabbed by little, grubby baby hands.  He gets really mad and tries to chomp on that little hand, and Mr. Cheeks laughs and slaps his thigh and goes for the leg again. 

I'm glad we are going to have a child that isn't scared of dogs, but I worry about him not having a healthy dose of fear around strange animals.  We'll have to work on it. 

Second Place is First Loser

Today, at TP's office they had a chili and cornbread cookoff.  Since my chili normally involves a can of chili seasoning and some beans and hamburger meat, I decided that that we would go with the cornbread category.  I don't like regular cornbread, unless it's in dressing, and my mom has always made Mexican Cornbread, that's what we went with. 

We won second prize!!  Woot!!! 

You dear readers, can also benefit from my mad cooking skillz.

  This goes well with any Mexican dish or casserole.  It's also good with Chili, Red Beans and Rice or for breakfast (well, I like it for breakfast, anyway). 

It's very moist, and the guys love it.

Mexican Cornbread

2 heaping cups of self rising cornmeal

2 eggs

One medium onion, diced

One can of cream style corn

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 cup whole milk

small jar of diced pimento

2 cups of grated Cheddar cheese (I normally grate my own because it tastes better, but you can always use the bagged kind.)

Nacho (pickled) jalapenos, to taste (you can use regular ones, but use sparingly, they can make this too hot in a second), I use about 10-12 circles for regular folks, coarsely chopped

Combine all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl.  I normally bust up the eggs in a seperate container first, and then pour them in so they get mixed well. If it looks too dry, you can add another egg or a little bit of milk and oil, not very much.

Pour into a Pam'ed 9x13 baking dish and bake at 350 for 30-40 minutes, or until bottom is slightly browned.

When done, slice off several pats of butter and put it on top to melt.  You can make this a day or so in advance, it tastes just as good warmed up in the oven or toaster oven. It makes about 12-15 slices.

A Day Late, and a Dollar Short

Like always.

One year ago, yesterday, I sat at my desk, went to Blooger and started this blog.  Then I talked about bacon. (I had bacon twice today, and no I'm not pregnant.) 

My sporadic attempts at posting tapered off in December and I moved on to bigger and better things, like more bacon and tax season.  Then I had a baby. (I can hear the collective internets now, *Gasp!* "I had no idea, since you never speak of this child!")  I came back to the blog world and found a community, friends from which I have grown to eagerly anticipate each new word from, even one of my college professors, and a plagiarizer (my claim to fame semi-recognizability).  As I look back through my archives, there's a lot of fluff there.  So readers, in the coming year, I promise to be more substantive in my posting and think deeper thoughts, and oh hell, who am I kidding, I'm going to be talking about the same shit I always have.  But it's still going to be funny (It is, right?  I hope it is.)

So, this week I have been working my fingers to the bone.  I am wearing the numbers off the ten key over here.  Lest you think that all I do is surf around the Internet being Princess Plagiarizer Catcher, here are some other EXCITING! NEW! DEVELOPMENTS!

I read several sections while I was waiting on a haircut, and while I have already spewed forth some of the prompts, there are plenty more I haven't, some that Blogger ate, and some that are too smart for me.

When the search results came up, there was a post by Amalah, with her name under it.  Then two results down, there were the exact same words, but it wasn't Amalah's website above it.  It was "Claudia's" website.  I think Technorati was picking up the outbound link from the hotlinked tire photo.  Claudia skillfully used the tire and then segued into the post about watching Blues Clues,  complete with the exact same pictures, except she called Noah, Cody and hotlinked the picture at the bottom, that showed the top of Amalah's head, to a picture on Amazon. 

All her friends thought she was so "LOL" and "U are soooooooooo kwel" and "this is my favorite, LOL!!!!" 

That people, is the unauthorized story of how I became the Internet's super sleuth (at least for the next two days or so.)

Who's going to send me a cape, or a monocle, or a little notebook (I would like a pink sparkley one with a feather pen)? 

In Mourning

--For the end of half day Fridays at the office.  Two weeks after tax season is over, we go to a M-Th 7:30-5:30 and Friday 8-12 schedule.  We revert back to normal the week of Labor Day.  I have spent my half days curled up with Mr. Cheeks in the bed taking ridiculously long naps, eating out (and having a lunch margarita, ok, margaritas) with other half day friends, cleaning the house, reading, and living in my pajamas on Friday afternoons.  Next Friday will be the longest Friday EVER.  Well, at least until next September, when it ends all over again. 

--For the cancellation of Stargate-SG1.  Now, you might say, "Kelly, I thought you didn't watch Sci-Fi channel?"  I do not (maybe if MacGyver was still on there).  But TP does.  And it gets him semi-out of my hair, so I can sit on the couch and blog hop peacefully while he catches up with the last few episodes on TIVO.  And there are no questions about what I am reading and what I'm typing and what, what, what.  After 10 new episodes in the fall, it will be over.  Maybe he will be able to find something else equally absurd, like the Blade series.  Because, Ugh.

-- For the end of August.  Even though school started weeks ago for most kids, and it's still going to  be hot in Alabama for the next 3 months, September 1st always feels the the start of something.  Our birthdays have just passed, the days are going to start getting shorter, the Halloween Thanksgiving Christmas(!!) decorations are being put out, and the dogs will start tracking in leaves soon.  It's the official start to not goofing off like it's summer anymore, and I hate to see it go.

My nephews and sister are coming for a visit this weekend.  I'm sure I will have 40 million pictures to share.  I hope everyone has a great and safe holiday weekend.
